12-Step Recovery Meetings at Town Square: An Important Piece of Community Wellness
Did you know that there are weekly 12-Step Recovery meetings at Town Square Community Center? Town Square is focused on the Green Lake community’s overall wellness. We are pleased that the community center is an excellent fit for the weekly, socially-distanced AA and Al-Anon meetings held every Sunday from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
These 12-Step meetings are a safe and anonymous (first names only) place for anyone to find support and understanding as they share their experience, strength, and hope with others impacted by alcoholism. The person-to-person exchange helps discover new choices and new ways of thinking about handling the effects of alcohol abuse.
The meetings at Town Square began this past October after a member who knows the staff asked if it would be possible for them to meet at the community center since they could no longer meet at the Berlin Hospital during the pandemic. They were uncertain when members would even be able to meet in person again.
Meeting organizers, Laurie and Paul, have shared with staff that the atmosphere and room arrangements at Town Square are perfect because it allows them to continue these meetings while practicing socially-distancing without limiting the number of attendees.
They also shared that the pandemic this past year has been challenging for everyone. Still, if you are impacted by alcoholism, the in-person meetings are crucial as they keep you connected and held accountable. They are aware that relapses and suicides have increased this past year, and they want people to know that these meetings are here to help.
The process of attending an in-person meeting is essential to a person’s recovery. The organizers have witnessed some powerful moments at their meetings. The support they give each other has bonded them. They have become a family and are even available to each other outside of the meetings.
If anyone fears coming to the 12-Step meetings because “someone might know them,” they want to emphasize that everyone is there for the same reason – to offer hope.
Laurie also wants everyone to know that she is working on creating an Alateen meeting on the same evenings as AA and Al-Anon. More information will be available in the spring.
Laurie and Paul hope you will consider “walking through the door” for these socially-distanced meetings every Sunday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The weekly AA meeting is located in Studio A, and Al-Anon is located in Studio B.
