When Town Square Community Center opened its doors in the vacated Green Lake County courthouse building in 2012, it was uncertain whether a nonprofit community center could operate sustainably without public funding. Over a decade later, the organization reported that its 11th year in operation brought 52,000 visitors and over half a million dollars earned and reinvested back into the community through programs, events, and gathering spaces.

“2023 was a bustling year with 250 programs, 108 events, and substantial upgrades to our treasured historic building,” said Town Square Executive Director Kristin Anderson. “It’s important for us to share these results with the community that makes it all possible.”

According to Town Square’s 2023 annual report released last week, just over half of its revenue was from fundraising, just under a quarter came from program income, and the rest was split between earnings from monthly Bingo, Hangers resale shop, and rent for office and event space.

The report also described the “strategic yet difficult” decision last year to sell the County’s former safety building. The reduction in financial overhead allowed for the community center to “right-size” its operations. Half of the proceeds were allocated to an Endowment and half to deferred maintenance of the former courthouse building that it continues to occupy, which was built in 1899 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Following the sale, Town Square’s board of directors updated its five-year strategic plan. A new tagline of “Create, Engage, Gather” serves as a directive to guide its activities.

As the busy summer season brings new and returning activities including live music at Town Square Tap, the summer market, the fourth annual Dino Daze, Family Fun Walks, and the Green Lake Fine Art Show – all made more enjoyable with building updates like renovated bathrooms and restored Terrazzo floors in the lobby – Anderson noted the progress is a direct result of prior year efforts.

“Every day there are more needs and opportunities to serve our community,” said Anderson. “You keep the momentum going by making donations, attending events, volunteering, playing Bingo, shopping at Hangers, and visiting the Tap.

“With your help, we believe Town Square is in the best position to grow and thrive in the future – serving as an anchor in our community and an inspiration for small towns across America. Thank you for being part of that legacy.”

Town Square Community Center is 100% privately funded and operated. Located in the heart of Green Lake, its mission is to enrich the lives of the Green Lake community members, family, and friends by providing cultural, social, recreational and educational opportunities for people of all ages.
